Affiliate Marketing 101: Make Money by Sharing What You Love

"You have money waiting for you."

OH YEAH!!!!!

When I get this message from PayPal I do a little dance and sing a little song. Why?

Because I get paid well for posting about products I love as an affiliate.

That's why I'm sharing how I started with affiliate marketing, and how you can become an affiliate marketer as well.

What is affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing is when you as an affiliate earn a commission or a percentage of sales of a product. As an affiliate, you become an integral part of the marketing plan for a company.

How much does affiliate marketing pay?

This varies. Sometimes people make percentages (I offer 50% of any course sale to my affiliates; you can sign up here), sometimes it is a flat fee, and sometimes it is a free product or membership.

So how do you become an affiliate for a company or brand?

1. Ask. I have found that when I love a product I want to share it. So I have asked before if a program had an affiliate or referral program. One of my favorite places to work out if in NYC is Luminary. I am an ambassador for them and I love it. I get to offer my referrals special opportunities and in turn I am rewarded.

2. Check out websites. Most programs that we use for technology have referral programs. For example, as a business owner I am or have been an affiliate for TeachableConvertKit, Mailerlite, and Kajabi. Whatever I am using I work to share with my own clients. Often there are also challenges that the companies offer and these challenges sweeten the bonuses. Love all the apps? Check out AppSumo for lifetime deals that save real cash here.

3. Apply. Some affiliate opportunities come only via application. Often these are larger companies that work with many different brands to offer affiliate opportunities. If approved you then use banners and other marketing materials to share your links.

4. Pitch yourself. Social Media is a great way to grow your affiliate marketing business. You can pitch to a company what you will provide and ask for compensation in return. This requires a bit more work and creation of a media deck. I have done awesome campaigns for companies like Fre, Jord Watches, Hidrate Water Bottles, and more. At times product is the compensation, but this can be a great way to save money and try out new items.

I'm an affiliate; now what?

You need to share your link...and this can be difficult. Here are a few tried and true ways I have found to share my affiliate links (This post does contain affiliate links which means I do get a small compensation if you click on them or purchase via them.)

Here are some ideas:

Amazon Associates: Share your favorite book in your social media feed. Or, if you host a book club, let your members know they can purchase the book and provide the link. For example, my book club read Marie Forleo's Everything is Figureoutable and I was able to earn from sharing. Haven't read it yet? Order yours here.

Rent the Runway: I absolutely love getting my outfits from RTR. As a teacher, this has literally been a lifesaver over the last 5 years. I do the Unlimited Plan. I can offer $100 off with my code: RTRFAM506A54. With RTR, you earn rewards like free spots or a free month.

Institute for Integrative Nutrition: I joined IIN after I found out I was BRCA1. I wanted to learn how to change my health and I also knew that a health coaching certification would be a great asset as a yoga teacher. You can check out their offerings which change often here. IIN offers a standard payment for affiliates.

My Favorite Coaches: I love Sara Dann for all things business (check out her page here), Angela Watson for all things education (check out the 40 Hour Week here), and Ivory Mix for all things templates (grab them here). Want to set up affiliate marketing for your business? Check out Zoe Linda's resources here. Need help with bookkeeping? Nicole Barham's 5 Minute Bookkeeper is the answer you seek! Grab it here.

Being an affiliate is a great way to earn extra money for doing something you already do...sharing what you love!
